2026 Artists Respond to Poetry

Arts Mid-Hudson seeks visual art and poetry submissions for inclusion in the exhibition, Artists Respond to Poetry, for the 9th annual celebration of National Poetry Month, which will be on view in Arts Mid-Hudson’s gallery opening on February 24, 2026. Selected poetry submissions will be compiled and made available to the selected visual artists; visual artists will then choose one of the poetry pieces to respond to through their work. The poems and artwork will be displayed together in the final exhibit, creating a unique fusion of poetry and visual expression.  

Eligibility:          

Visual Artists and Poets must primarily reside in Dutchess, Orange, Ulster, Columbia, Greene, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, or Westchester Counties in New York State.              

Timeline: 

  • Deadline for poets and artists to apply: Friday, January 9, 2026            
  • Notification of acceptance & poems made available to artists: Tuesday, January 20, 2026            
  • If the visual artist is selected, artwork made in response to a poem is due: Thursday, February 12, 2026 (artists receive 3 1/2 weeks for creation)  
  • Artwork drop-off dates: Thursday-Friday, February 12-13, 2026 
  • Show on view: Tuesday, February 24 - April 12, 2026   
  • Artwork pick-up: Sunday, April 12 & Tuesday, April 14, 2026

Details for poets:

  • Poets may submit up to three poems for consideration in the show. 
  • Can be published and unpublished works
  • Poems must be finalized works, ready for display 
  • Poems must fit on one 8 1/2 x 11 page in 12 pt font
  • There is no specific theme or prompt for poets. The selection committee will seek a variety of work to inspire participating visual artists.
  • Poems must be suitable to be hung in a public gallery at the discretion of the selection committee and Arts Mid-Hudson.
  • Arts Mid-Hudson will print finalized poems on foam core for exhibition display
  • Poems are not for sale   

 Details for visual artists:

  • Artists may submit up to three art pieces as a sample of their work. These individual works will not be included in the show. The visual artist will be asked to create a new piece responding to the poem they select.
  • There is no size limit for submissions, but if selected, work created may not exceed 30 inches in any dimension, including framing.
  • Artists are welcome to create a new work or use an existing piece that connects to the chosen poem
  • All visual artistic mediums are eligible, 2-D and 3-D (sculpture).
  • Sculptures may not exceed 15 inches in any dimension
  • Work must be suitable for the gallery at the discretion of the selection committee and Arts Mid-Hudson.
  • All submissions will be accepted using this online form.
  • Artworks can be for sale. Arts Mid-Hudson receives a 25% commission on the sale of artworks
